MANISTEE
--- The Women’s Economic Resource Center (WERC) in
Manistee is pleased to announce entertainer Claudia Schmidt will
be the guest speaker at the December 20th luncheon to
be held at the Three Fires Conference Center at the Little River
Casino Resort. In
addition, the third annual book collection will take place to
support the Women’s Economic Resource Center section of books
at the Manistee County Library. The luncheon is sponsored by
Edward Jones, Bob Hathon Investment Representative in Manistee.
Michigan
native Claudia Schmidt has covered a lot of musical ground.
Thirty-three years as a touring professional have found her
traversing North America as well as Europe in venues ranging
from intimate clubs to 4,000 seat theatres, and festival stages
in front of 25,000 rapt listeners. She performed at WSCC and in
Onekama this past year.
She
has recorded thirteen albums of mostly original songs, exploring
folk, blues, and jazz idioms featuring her acclaimed12 string
guitar and mountain dulcimer playing. Claudia Schmidt has
collaborated with the New Reformation Jazz Band on a Dixieland
gospel recording and a tribute to Gershwin and Ellington in
celebration of their hundredth birthdays. Her latest work in the
Jazz field has her leading her own swinging sextet - Claudia
Schmidt with the Jump Boys. In the Summer of 2006 Claudia
released her first self-produced folk/acoustic CD Spinning.
This recording is a coming home of sorts for Claudia with
a studio full of Michigan’s finest musicians.
“Claudia
performed with her group, The
Biddies, at the Wheatland Music Festival in September
2006,” said Judy Crockett from WERC . “We knew right then
that she was a “must have” for our luncheons. This is a
woman who understands women. She is very funny and very
talented. We were so pleased she agreed to speak and perform at
our luncheon.”
In
addition to coming to enjoy the performance, each woman is asked
to bring a new or used book to donate to the WERC section at the
Manistee County Library. The book should be a book focusing on
the professional development and leadership of women or a book
that has touched her life that she feels is important to share
with other women, said Crockett.
“Susan
Wess, the former director at the Library was instrumental in
helping us to organize this important book drive originally in
2005,” said Crockett. “We often recommend important books to
women but we also know many women cannot afford to purchase the
books. This section at the library helps fulfills a tremendous
void in our community.”
Any
woman interested in attending this luncheon opportunity should
simply send an email to WERC
at manisteewomen @yahoo.com and ask to be included.
The cost is $10 and it is payable at the door. The
Christmas luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, December 20th
from 11:45 –
1:15 pm at the Little River Casino Resort.
