MANISTEE
--
Two Manistee High School students, Laura Lindgren and
Chelsie Niemi, were recently selected to participate in the
2007—2008 session of the Women’s Economic Resource
Center’s (WERC) 2007 Mentoring Program.
The
purpose of the program is to give Manistee County students a
chance to explore career options with women engaged in those
occupations.
Chelsie,
a 10th grader at MHS, is the daughter of Bryan and Missy
Edmonson.
Her mentor, Stephanie Smart, is a nurse practitioner with
Manistee Benzie Community Mental Health.
“I’ve wanted to be a doctor as long as I can
remember,” said Chelsie.
“Being with Stephanie has given me a better idea about
some of the things that people involved in medicine have to do
every day.”
Laura’s
mentor is Maureen Barry, a chemical engineer at Packaging
Corporation of America.
Her parents, Mark and Vivian Lindgren, are also chemical
engineers..
“I think chemicals are cool,” said the MHS junior,
“and I like working with them.
It’s fascinating to learn how they act and how much
they are used in every part of our lives.”
Kendra
Thompson, chair of WERC’s Mentoring Committee announced that
the second session of the ‘07-08 program will begin in
January. “We have two more wonderful women from our community
willing to serve as mentors - Stephanie Ogren, an aquatic
biologist with LRBOI and Jane Johnson, an attorney in private
practice.”
The
Women’s Economic Resource Center mission is to actively
cultivate and support the professional development and
leadership of women and girls in Manistee County and the
surrounding area.
