February 6, 2008  |  League of Women Voters' February 14 Dinner Meeting

Now there are not too many folks who would think that taking your sweety out for a night of 'talking trash' was a great way to spend Valentine's Day but … if you come down to the Tuscan Grille on River Street in Manistee at 6 p.m. for socializing and dinner ‑ or just chocolate! ‑ from the menu at 6.30, you will be AMAZED at what come next!

If you're looking to spend that special evening of Valentine's Day having dinner with friends then why not join us, League of Women Voters Manistee County, for candle light, great food, a little music, and the chance to laugh and learn about the amazing places your trash might take all of us next!

If you're humming that old tune about "looking for love in all the wrong places" as we rapidly approach that certain day in February, how about "looking for gold in the strangest of places"??! Why do we look at trash as an expensive problem to be buried and not a treasure trove to be mined for all it's worth?

And how fitting that on the anniversary of the founding of the League of Women Voters. It's those darn feisty women who are at it again, turning the controversy about trash on its head and asking a really simple question: If they can turn trash into gold in other places, why can't we do it here, build cutting edge businesses, create jobs AND make money at it!?

So bring yourself, bring your significant other and enjoy an evening with friends and let's get down and dirty!

As Manistee County's Alliance For Economic Success gathers thoughts and opinions about how we handle what we throw away every day come on down and be amazed at:

·         Video of award winning designs for architectural glass, floors and counter surfaces made from recycled glass, mirrors and ‑ wait for it ‑ old sinks, tubs and toilets!

·         Video of how to turn scrap tires into an inert building material.

·         Video of how to turn trash into an energy source to power thousands of homes.

Our guest is Patty O'Donnell, Regional Planner with Northwest Michigan Council of Governments which hosts the Solid Waste Advisory Committee.

In 2005, Regional Planning staff hosted regional solid waste forums to discuss regional solid waste and recycling issues with representatives of the ten county area. The forums identified the need for a regional framework to encourage cross-county discussion and implementation of regional solutions. Hence, the Solid Waste Advisory Committee was formed:

·         To provide a forum for regional networking and common needs identification and a framework for joint program implementation.

·         To respond to and advocate for legislation that meets the needs of northwest Lower Michigan's communities.

·         To research solid waste and recycling "best practices" and the potential development of regional programs, and make recommendations to the NWMCOG Board about potential strategies and programs.

·         To cooperatively develop solid waste plans – both inter-county and regional plans – that serve the public good.

·         To reach out to elected officials to listen, inform, and educate them about solid waste and recycling issues and opportunities.

Patty also Chairs the Northwest Michigan Sustainable Business Forum (www.nwmsbf.org) which is united in their commitment to achieve sustainability by coming together to:

·         Enhance the bottom line

·         Protect quality of life

·         Improve the community

So if this peaks your interest or you think this is just crazy enough to want to find out what the heck these women are up to now - come to dinner!
