County Chamber: ATHENA Award Nominees Sought
Nominations
are now being accepted for the Manistee County ATHENA Award, to
be presented on Wednesday, May 7. The award program will be
hosted by the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce at noon at the
Manistee Golf and Country Club. The deadline for nominations is
March 31. The ATHENA Award is presented to exceptional
individuals who have achieved excellence in their business and
professional lives, have served the community in a meaningful
way, and have assisted women in reaching their full leadership
potential. This national program started in Lansing in 1982 and
now is presented in hundreds of cities throughout the United
States and Canada. The award takes the form of a hand-cast
bronze sculpture symbolizing the strength, courage, and wisdom
of the recipient. Those involved in organizing the local ATHENA
Award Program believe in the values underlying the ATHENA
Foundation's philosophy of incorporating the talent and
expertise of women into the leadership of our businesses,
communities, and government. "Many of us are fortunate to
have been inspired by someone to become the best we can possibly
be," said Joni Purgiel, Chair of the ATHENA Planning
Committee. "By honoring these exceptional leaders, others
will be encouraged to excel. We invite everyone to consider
nominating those who exemplify the ATHENA philosophy in Manistee
County." Other members of the ATHENA Planning Committee
include Sharron Lemmer, Amanda Long, Janice McCraner, Beth
McCarthy, Dianna Wall and Steve Morris. The ATHENA International
underwriters are General Motors, National City Bank, and the law
firm Buchanan Ingersoll PC. Nomination forms for the ATHENA
Award, which are due by March 31, are available from the
Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce, 11 Cypress Street, Manistee;
calling the chamber at 723-2575; at the web site www.manisteecountychamber.com;
the Manistee and Onekama branches of National City Bank;
Benchley Buick Pontiac, GMC; Goody's Juice and Java; West Shore
Medical Center; or from any committee member.
