Status
of Women in Michigan
Elizabeth Thompson from the Michigan Women’s Commission
will be the speaker at the Thursday April 17 Women’s Economic
Resource Center netWork luncheon beginning at 11:45 at Manistee
Golf and County Club on Cherry Street in Manistee
In 1996, the Nokomis Foundation released the first Status
of Michigan Women report as part of a sweeping, nationwide
project led by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research to
track the status of women in all 50 states and the District of
Columbia. The report provided state policymakers activists,
scholars, and advocates with comprehensive, reliable data to use
in developing public policy and programs affecting Michigan
Women.
In 2004, the report was updated. This updated report provided
a gauge of how far we have come - - and how far we still have to
go - to bring
autonomy and equality for women in Michigan in the areas of
political participation, employment and earnings, social and
economic autonomy, reproductive rights, and health and
well-being.
Elizabeth Thompson will provide information on the report as
well as updated information that should be of importance to all
policy makers, educators, business people, and individuals
concerned with issues that affect women.
The report is a catalyst for bringing about positive change
for women in Michigan - -stimulating policy, educating voters,
inspiring activism, strengthening nonprofit organizations, and
challenging new corporate initiatives.
WERC will also build partnerships with other programs and
organizations that are working to provide sustainable
livelihoods, political and leadership opportunities and access
for women and girls. More information about WERC can be found at
the web site www.manisteewerc.org
The luncheon will be held Thursday April 17 at Manistee Golf
and County Club on Cherry Street in Manistee. Doors open at
11:30 am. The cost is $10 payable at the door. To register send
an email to manisteewomen@yahoo.com.
This luncheon is sponsored by Watson’s Manistee
Chrysler.
“All women are encouraged to attend the luncheons and
participate in WERC,” said Crockett. “We hold our regular
monthly Women’s netWork luncheons on the third Thursday of
each month. And the WERC board meetings are held the third
Tuesday of each month.”
